To use sugars as their receptors, a variety of viruses might have stolen a host galectine and use it as a viral lectin. On the other hand, using protein receptors may enhance the affinity and specificity of viral attachment, increase the efficiency of viral entry, and facilitate viruses to expand their host ranges and alter their tropism.
