The brain has a small quantity of antioxidant enzymes despite its high amout of oxygen consumption, which makes it susceptible to reactive oxygen species. Beta-amyloid causes damage to mitochondrial membranes and hence increases the amount of intracellular H2O2, thus affecting the genes downstream by interacting with numerous receptors and damaging neurons, ultimately accelerating cell death.
