In ensuring that physicians offer regenerative and stem cell therapies in a manner that is consistent with safe and responsible practices, state medical boards should ensure that any treatment offered to patients is informed by an appropriate history and physical examination; such informed consent is obtained after an explanation has been provided describing risks, benefits, alternative treatment options, expected convalescence, and expected treatment outcomes; that relevant information about the clinical encounter and ongoing care plans has been documented in the patient’s medical record; that the physician is appropriately trained in, and knowledgeable about the proposed treatment; and that the patient has not been coerced in any way into receiving treatments or exploited through the charging of excessive fees.
