Clinical trial that investigates potential of human embryonic stem cell-based therapy for the treatment of diabetes mellitus is opened and recruitment of patients has begun in 2014. The goal of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of VC-01, an implant containing human embryonic stem cells derived pancreatic progenitor cells encapsulated by an immune protecting device, which would allow the cells to proliferate and differentiate into mature β-cells in vivo without the possibility of immune rejection.
