Swelling of the skin without wheals, or angioedema, may be due to C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency, and this may be a hereditary or an acquired disease. The reactions may be painful subcutaneous or submucosal reactions initiated by trauma and may involve the gut, causing colic, or the larynx, causing difficulty breathing. This type of angioedema ia rare but potentially life threatening.
