Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) part 36

hla protein 1

The superior ability of dendricic cells to cross-present is largely attributed to their antigen processing capacity. Endocytic low pathways in dendritic cells preserves and retain antigen epitopes via low lysosomal proteolysis and expression of protease inhibitors. This aspect makes sense when one considers that dendritic cells  pick up antigen in the peripheral tissue and migrate for several hours days (12-24 hours for dermal dendritic cells and 3 days for Langerhans cells) reaching the lymp nodes. Thus, instead of being processed and degraded prematurely, retention of antigen would allow optimal cross-presentation for subsequent recognition by lymph node resident naive  CD8 T cells.
