Reducing cardiovascular risk-pharmacotherapy

Happy kidney character

Pharmacotherapy in chronic kidney disease:

  • Chronic kidney disease can cause and aggravate hypertension, and hypertension can contribute to the progression of chronic kidney disease
  • Reducing blood pressure to below target levels is one of the most important goals in management of chronic kidney disease
  • In people with chronic kidney disease, blood pressure lowering therapy should begin with either ACE inhibitor (Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor) or ARB (Angiotensin II  receptor blocker)
  • Hypertension maybe difficult to control and multiple medications are frequently required
  • Assess risk of atheroscelerotic events and consider treating with an antiplatelet agent unless there is an increased bleeding risk
